Always be positive! If you were fired from your last position and the interviewer asks why, angle your story in a positive way. Should that be impossible, be brief about the situation. Remember, you are trying to sell yourself to the employer, so highlighting any flaws is never a good idea.

Point out your skills and achievements. Use each answer as an opportunity to display your skills, or accomplishments. Employers want to know what you are capable of, but they also want to hear about the positive things you have already done. Never be boastful, or egotistical about it.

Speak in a professional manner. You are not getting together with friends, so always be professional and speak in a mature manner. Words like “ain’t” or “gonna” should be avoided. If you cannot take the interview seriously, how can you take the job seriously?

Research the company. Make sure you know as much as you can about the company you are interviewing for. There is a good chance they will ask you some specifics. If you fail to do any research, it will look as though you have taken no initiative or interest in the company.

Smile and show enthusiasm. A smiling, happy and motivated employee is what companies are looking for. Appearing angry, or depressed will most likely turn off an interviewer. If you are particularly nervous, try not to let it show in your facial expressions or speech. Remember to breathe and relax.

    okay, so if you were fired from a job because someone complained that you were being rude how do you best explain on an application the “reason for leaving”….

      You could say something like “I usually have no problem getting along with my supervisors, but I did not get off to a good start with my previous supervisor, our personalities clashed. I think I’m wiser now. I’d like the chance to prove that to you. ” You might not want to say you were rude, but if you rtuly were you might consider working on your customer service skills, or choosing a position where customer service is not a daily activity.
