How would the person holding this position be evaluated and how often? – Different companies have different methods of evaluation. Find out exactly how your performance will be measured and how often.

Is this a new position? How long did the previous person hold this position? – The idea here is find out, indirectly, how long employees hold the position you are applying for. If the previous holder was only there for a short time, this could be a red flag.

Could you describe the company culture? – Company culture is very important, but often overlooked by potential employees. Your everyday work environment can have a huge impact on your performance and whether or not you will succeed. Find out as much as you possibly can about the company’s work environment.

How would you describe the management style of this department? – This is another question that can help you determine whether or not you will be a good fit for the company or organization.

What do you like about working here? - Find out what it is about the company that the interviewer likes. This may give you some insider information on company culture or perks without asking directly.

What would you say are the most challenging aspects of this position? – Find out what you will be up against if you are offered the position.

Do you have any concerns about my fit for this position that I could address? – This question may seem inappropriate, but it the answer will give you an idea of what the interviewer’s impression of you is. Address these concerns in a positive manner.

Are there any opportunities for growth within the company? – This will allow you to see if there is room for you to move up in the company without giving the impression that you would not be satisfied with the open position.

What is the next step? - This is a popular way to close out an interview. It will give you an idea of whether or not there will be more rounds of interviews and when you may expect to hear from the employer.

Just as there are appropriate questions to ask during an interview, there are also inappropriate ones. Make sure to avoid inquiring about the position’s salary, vacation times or any personal questions directed at the interviewer. With a little online research, you might be able to find out what the salary of the position, or a similar one, is. Also, avoid asking about things the interviewer may not be able to answer.
